Timothy F. McGoughran Moderates Panel at NJ ICLE’s 2019 Family Law Symposium

On January 26, 2019, Timothy F. McGoughran, Esq., moderated a panel at the New Jersey ICLE’s 2019 Family Law Symposium. Mr. McGoughran served on a panel that discussed “The New Alimony Law-How’s That Working For You?”, alongside other prominent panelists Jeralyn Lawrence, Esq., Hon. Thomas P. Zampino, PJFP (Ret.), and Mark H. Sobel, Esq.

The Family Law Symposium-New Jersey’s leading family law conference- was presented in association with the NJSBA Family Law Section. Hundreds of family law attorneys, judges, paralegals, and professionals convened on January 25th and 26th in New Brunswick to examine today’s biggest matrimonial law issues and innovations. The Family Law Symposium covered issues such as the new alimony law, variable income/variable alimony, the economic and custodial consequences of 50/50 child custody, the top ten most important family law cases of 2018, the new and amended court rules and statutes, and many more family law topics.


McGoughran becomes NJSBA Secretary

A Monmouth County practitioner was sworn in last month as secretary of the state’s largest group of judges, lawyers and legal professionals.

Timothy F. McGoughran, a former trustee, became Secretary of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

He is on-track to serve as the 125th president of the association in 2023.

McGoughran has always enjoyed the camaraderie and networking the NJSBA offers and said he  looks forward to working for its members on the executive committee. “Being a part of the NJSBA has made me a better lawyer. The friendships I have enjoyed as a member of the NJSBA have made me a better person,” he said “I look forward to giving back my time to continue the growth of the NJSBA and providing greater benefits for our members.”

McGoughran established an Ocean Township law firm that concentrates on handling divorce, estate and family law matters. He served as municipal prosecutor in Ocean Township for over a decade, concluding in 2011. Since January 2012, he has been the municipal court judge in Ocean Township.

McGoughran’s involvement in the organized bar is extensive. He is co-chair of the Legislative and Meeting Arrangement and Program committees, a member and Former Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Family Law Section’s Executive Committee, and is active with the Military Law and Veteran’s Affairs Section, as well as the Legal Education Committee.

In addition, he is active with the Monmouth Bar Association, serving as a trustee for many years, and its president from 2007-2008. He speaks regularly about family law and ethics and served as the moderator of the 2017 Family Law Symposium.

He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Seton Hall University School of Law.


2017 Annual Family Law Holiday Party Supporting the Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County

As chair for the Family Law Executive Committee, Timothy McGoughran hosted this year’s Family Law Section’s Holiday Party at Deal Golf and Country Club in Deal, New Jersey. The event was attended by the lawyers and judges that make up the Family Law Section. The event was also attended by accountants, bankers, and other family law professionals. The event was attended by over two hundred (200) people including family law attorneys, judges, accountants, financial planners, lending experts, software and social media experts.

The event was successful in raising significant funds for this year’s charity the Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County, Inc., through an extensive raffle featuring items and baskets that were donated by members of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, local businesses, and trustees of the Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County. Assisting Mr. McGoughran with this Annual Holiday Event were the co-chairs of the Young Lawyers Division of the Family Law Section Cassie Murphy, Esq. and Thomas Roberto, Esq.


NJSBA 2017 Family Law Section Retreat is headed to Cancun!

As Chair of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, Timothy F. McGoughran has planned for this year’s Family Law Retreat to take place at the beautiful JW Marriott in Cancun, Mexico. This annual retreat is attended by family law attorneys and experts from varying supportive fields, such as accounting, banking, financial planning, and insurance. The four day retreat will include educational seminars showcasing the most current family law cases, statutes, and legislation, as well as networking events among the varying family law professionals. The retreat will take place from March 22nd to the 26th.

Cancun, a small fishing village only 40 years ago, is now known for its beautiful beaches, awe-inspiring Mayan ruins, and fun-filled nightlife. With a vast array of activities and fun to be had, Cancun is perfect for the whole family! 2017 Family Law Symposium 101

This past weekend, Timothy F. McGoughran, who is currently the Executive Chair of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, served as the chair person and moderator of the Annual Family Law Symposium in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This annual event draws hundreds of family law judges, attorneys, paralegals, accountants, and other professionals.

This year, over 650 people attended the annual event. Panelists and speakers included some of the top family law judges, lawyers, and professionals in New Jersey. Panel topics ranged from Alimony, Child Support, and Spousal Duties to Domestic Violence Issues to LGBT and Marriage Equality updates. Panel reviews were conducted to discuss both the Top Ten Cases in Family Law and the Unpublished, But Not Unimportant: New 2016 Family Law Cases to Notice. These panels give attendees a more in-depth look into some of todays most important topics within family law.

Timothy McGoughran has served as a panelist at the symposium for many years. With over 30 (thirty) years of experience in family law, Mr. McGoughran feels it is important to use his knowledge and experience to educate others, as well as keeping himself up to date with the latest developments in family law.

Timothy F. McGoughran Sworn in as the Executive Chair of the Family Law Executive Committee

Timothy F. McGoughran was sworn in as the Executive Chair of the Family Law Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association on May 19, 2016. The swearing in was held at the Annual Meeting of the New Jersey State Bar Association at the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The ceremony began with opening remarks from Stephanie F. Hagan, Esq., the Chair Elect, and outgoing remarks from the Immediate Past Chair, Amanda S. Trigg, Esq. Mr. McGoughran was then introduced by both Steven J. Robinson, Esq., his law school roommate from Seton Hall, and the Honorable Eugene A. Iadanza (Ret.), an esteemed colleague and member of the McGoughran Law Firm. Mr. McGoughran has been working in the field of family law for over 30 years, and feels both honored and privileged to lead this committee with its over 1,300 members. He will serve as the Executive Chair for the 2016-2017 calendar year.
